Thå history of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia is the history of origin,development and perfection of pedagogical education in Russia.
In pre-revolutinary Russia there were some pedagogical institutes. In 1920 the Third Pedagogical Institute was named after Alexander Ivanovich Hertzen who was the great Russian writer, publicist, philosopher and revolutionary democrate.The Leningrad Hertzen State Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1925 having united three Pedagogical Institutes. In 1991 the Institute was certificated as a University and now is called "Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia ".
In 1998 the president issued a decree to include Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia into the State Registeras a specially valuable establishment of cultural heritage of Russia's peoples. It's one of the largest and best universities that trains teachers in our country.
There are 21 faculties in the University. Many of faculties have natiional and international reputation for the high standart of teaching.
The main building of the University ia situated in St. Petersburg's historical centre at 48, Moika Embankment.

Philological Faculty

Philological faculty is situated in the historical building at 1st Liniya, 52,Vasilievsky Ostrov. There was 200th anniversary of this building in 2004.
In 1783 Catherine II issued an edict according to which Russian Academy was founded. But for a long time it hasn't had its own building. On July 10, 1800 Russian Academy of Science was got the place at Vasilievsky Ostrov.
Duchess E.R. Dashkova was the first president of Russian Academy. A. S. Pushkin was in this building several times as a valid member of Russian Academy of Science.
